Battery Operated Televisions

portable television?

Does anyone know what will become of small handheld televisions or small emergency tv's that run off of batteries when the signals switch to all digital? It's not like you can put a converter box on it. I am from New Orleans and during Katrina with no power the battery operated tv was one of the few ways of staying up to date.

  1. Mobile TV. You can get it on most modern cell/mobile phones. It ain't the best quality, but if you settle for low quality picture and expensive plan then it can be quite convenient.

  3. There is at least one converter on the approved list that can be battery powered. The alternative is to buy a portable TV with a built in digital tuner. http://www.ezdigitaltv.com/Artec_T3A.html http://www.nextag.com/portable-tvs/search-html
  4. If the portable TV has a connector for an external antenna or A/V cables, you can connect it to a converter box. Several models will use external power supplies, you would want one of these so you can rig a battery pack to power it. At least one model runs on 12 volts; this would be an obvious choice if you plan on running it from a car battery. I'm not sure if you could run both the TV and converter from the same battery, that would depend on the design details of the converter & TV. In regards to TV's that just have a built in antenna, I've not heard of anyone modifying one to use with a converter box. I suspect it wouldn't be that difficult, but I don't have one to play with*. (If some someone has a small LCD one they don't want anymore, I'd be willing to experiment. Wouldn't matter if the antenna was broken off or what it looked like.)
