Can a sky digi box blow up a portable TV?

The reason I ask is that for the last 5yrs we have watched sky via a 50" rear projection TV which we sold yesterday. As a temporary measure I connected the Sky digi box to a 18 month old portable which seemed OK but just now the screen has gone accompanied by a bang and burning smell - coincidence or not?
