Can electrical apliances affect laptops?
I operate my laptop mainly on electric not batteries, but within approx. a half metre of my television: I always make sure telly s switched off at the socket, can this harm a laptop in any way being so close?

- Surge of electricity could damage the laptop I guess. If the battery is removed. The only thing I can think of that could damage electronics would be the microwave, cordless phones and cell phones. Tvs havn't been pumping out radiation for a long time. However, unplugging and plugging the tv in will shorten the life span of that tv.
- no. It is fine.
- It Depends On The Surge, And How Strong It Is But Usually No
- i think cordless phone can affect wifi
- Hi Marky; Not unless the laptop is plugged into the same outlet or powerbar which may get a surge of electricyt. Other than that it will not hurt your laptop.
- no laptops and conventional computers have to comply with a standard and in the USA with FCC rules, it is possible for older monitors to be affected if a lamp or something like that has a transformer since the coils induce flux or EMF or electromagenticflux the electromagnetic force can affect the deflection coils in older monitors. most laptops are not affected by EMF since they would not be any use if they were and would not be able to function the laptop battery cannot interfere with a laptop, its a DC device not a V+AC the battery is used for where no electrical supply is available to power the computer for the time that is the capacity of the battery if mains power is in use, then the battery is not normally connected unless its on charge and when it is, it is usually removed anyway and laptops are not transported with the battery in place. as for spikes and power jolts its very rare that this happens and the computer could in theory be affected by such a serge but the route to the system is so loaded with fuses and ""jumper switches"" that its very rare. a laptop is an electrical device like any other device its built to deal with problems of environment and electrical issues.
- Hi Marky having read all the answers they all miss one topic, white noise which is sometimes generated by contacts on thermostats, used in fridges freezers and electric irons. this is usually suppressed by a 0.1uf capacitor rated at twice the voltage being used across the contacts. Central heating thermostats are a common cause also
- no but lightning storm can destroy you laptop and television
