Battery Operated Televisions

What did you think of all the Men Power commercials this Super Bowl :)?

The New York Times is practically having a cow about in on their blog, calling them 'misogynistic': http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/07/super-bowl-ad-watch-a-look-at-the-other-side-of-tonights-game/?hp I for one found them amusing and SO true! Especially that Dodge car one where the men said all the things they sacrifice to make their women happy.. but they won't let go of their right to drive their Dodge! :P Also, that one commercial about a guy getting a portable TV (the one who was critiquing lavender with his girl), and how he's not gonna wear the skirt anymore - VERY empowering! :) I think it shows a double standard in today's America, where men can't be men anymore. I liked them :) Here's the Dodge commercial, entitled 'Man's Last Stand': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4Ow465Ea2o&feature=player_embedded

  1. They didn't bother me. I think that there will be people who will get their panties in a wad and want those companies to take their commercials off the air. I didn't see anything offensive about them. People just read way too much into some commercials and take them far too seriously. I didn't see anything that would have me boycotting a company or something equally as extreme. Edit: I also agree with The Passenger. If you allow someone else to tell you what you can and can't do, especially with your own money, then you're a pansy of epic proportions. My boyfriend doesn't do half of that stuff (and I don't expect him to...hold my lip balm? Really?). He drives the biggest, loudest Jeep I've ever seen, along with a Civic that's lower to the ground than I've ever seen and with enough bass to rattle the world. I've been tempted to steal them both for a joyride. He'd so kill me though.
  2. I saw nothing wrong with them. They made me laugh.
  3. Ha! My husband and I laughed our a**es off at that commercial. You want to know why? Cause my husband doesn't do any of that crap and he still drives the car he wants. He drives a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. I don't tell him what kind of car to drive and he didn't balk when I picked out my car. Seriously men, get over yourselves. I know I'm being a bit mean here but seriously - that ad made those guys look like mamby pamby babies. Oh, I'm so sorry your wife won't let you drive the car you want... boo freakin' hoo. If all that's keeping you from the car of your dreams is some underwear on the floor and you can't be bothered to pick it up then you are a loser and you probably can't be trusted with that much horsepower.
  4. there are so MANY things out that talk about WOMAN EMPOWERMENT.....what's wrong with equal air time for men......apparently you don't watch ESPN......besides they only commercials
  5. I didn't see the big deal. Some were stupid but a few were funny. The one with Jim Nantz and the guy in the mall for the little TV thing was one of the better ones of the night. How come this blog doesn't mention that every single offender of the Green Police commercial getting arrested was male? Talk about playing male stereotypes. Not that it offended me (although I did think the commercial was stupid, that's another matter) but come on, if you're going to get on one side you gotta do both sides. I'd be lying if I said I didn't notice this trend though. It'll be interesting to see how the feminist blogs take this Super Bowl. Especially with that evil, terrible Tim Tebow ad on top of things where he banished everyone to hell...oh wait, never mind, that DIDN'T HAPPEN. Maybe people ought to see what something is actually going to say before they go ballistic about it.
  6. I don't see how it's an America where men can't be men anymore. Men are more worried about what other men think about them or how what they do or don't do will influence their competition with other men. The advertisers purposefully manipulate men, you know. You so desperately want never to be viewed as feminine in any way - so they advertise what it means to be feminine or unfeminine to get you to buy their stuff. If being manipulated into spending your money on particular items in the hopes that no one will think you are girlie is empowering - then I guess you feel REALLY empowered right now.
  7. I do not become affected by it because: 1. The majority of football viewers are men, And they all want to be kings when watching football. 2. They enjoy watching sports because they get to screaming, drinking, eating, and in some cases crying ( and all at once). there are not a lot of situation were a grown man can partake in that .( and still appear to be somewhat manly).
  8. All I can say is it was a great experience. I am not a big football fan(but the game was great), nor am I a fan of TV in general, but sitting around watching the game with friends and family, combined with positive male advertisement was enjoyable. First time in years I found watching TV enjoyable.
  9. It's late I really didn't read or look at anything you just wrote except for the question. Now in my humble opinion the word sexism gets used too quickly and loosely for me to take it seriously anymore. (I don't ignore it but it's a warn out word)
  10. Darling, it has long been an axiom in advertising that if you make a woman insecure enough, you can sell her anything...apparently, advertisers are moving away from their usual "show 'em boobs and they'll buy it" strategy with men, and trying to make you guys all insecure that you're acting manly enough and anxious to buy the products that show that you're not whipped. It's just advertising. All they want to do is sell you things, darling.
  11. i didn't have anything against them, but those go daddy's were awkward as hell at the party
  12. When was the last time you saw a man - doing any kind of indoor household chores (most notably cleaning, laundry, and the dishes) - riding in the passenger seat while his wife drives the car - cooking breakfast while his wife heads out the door to work - putting dinner on the table for his wife and children - portrayed as legitimately subservient (this =/= intellectually inferior) to his wife in a commercial? But you're right, advertising that explicitly empowers men is so refreshing! Usually it's just advertising that implicitly disempowers women!
  13. Anything about men that says anything positive, uplifting or empowering about us is automatically misogynistic. Don't you watch TV? We are incompetent, stupid buffoons, and only the wise ways of a woman can save us! I think sitcoms are funny, because on the shows the men are never able to cook because it's just too complicated for us to follow recipes with 5 steps in them even though some of us have science degrees. I learned how to cook because I realized that women don't know how anymore, and I like to eat good food.
