Battery Operated Televisions

How many kilowatt hours does a 19 inch portable TV use?

Most of the time I fall asleep with the TV on, so it's usually on from about 7 PM to 5 AM the next morning. How many KWH a month does this waste, or is it so insignificant that I shouldn't lose sleep over it?

  1. A very simple way around this would be to buy a timer, you know the type, you plug the timer into the socket you use for your TV then plug the TV into the timers socket, they don't cost much now, you can then set your timer to switch the TV off when you know you will fall asleep, that way you will save money and save your CO2 emissions, every little bit helps, good luck.
  2. A TV that size probably uses about 100 watts. In the 10 hours you have it on the TV would use 1 kilowatt-hour. At 14 cents/kilowatt hour (typical California rate), that would amount to $4.20 per month. You should check to see if the TV has a sleep timer -many do. It shuts down the TV after a predetermined amount of time, up to 90 minutes usually. When you start to get drowsy, activate the sleep timer. Or just go to bed ;-)
